What is alternative Asian handicap?

Let’s start by explaining what does alternative Asian handicap mean. As we explained in our Asian handicap betting guide, this option is divided into three categories:

  • Full line: The bet can be for a whole number (i.e. +1.00)
  • Half line: The bet can be for a decimal number (i.e. -1.50)
  • Quarter line: You are placing two different bets with whole/decimal numbers (i.e. -1.0 & -1.5).

All of these numbers represent virtual points assigned to the teams. The favorite team gets minus and the underdog team gets plus numbers. So, for example:

  • +1.00 = This means the team is an underdog and starts the game with +1 goal.
  • -1.50 = This means the team is a favorite and starts the game with -1.50 goals.

In order to win the bet, these teams must win or lose within these pre-defined limits. So if the point is
-1.50, for example, that team must win the match by 2 points or more: If it wins the game with a single point difference, you lose this bet.

Traditionally, full line bets are called “regular” Asian handicap betting, and half – quarter line bets are called “alternative Asian handicap betting”. So there is no such thing as “alternative Asian handicap -1”, for example: If you are seeing a single whole number, this means it is the regular Asian handicap. However, most of the Asian handicap bookmakers do not pay attention to such distinctions.

On some websites, you can see that full line bets are also offered under the alternative Asian handicap category. Some bookies, on the other hand, offer all options under alternative goal line and/or Asian line betting categories, without making any distinction between regular and alternative.

The difference between Asian handicap and alternative Asian handicap

Alert

• In Asian handicap (full line), you place a single bet and it is possible to get a full refund if the match ends with a tie.
• In alternative Asian handicap (half-line), you place a single bet, and winning or losing half of your bet is possible.
• In alternative Asian handicap (quarter line), you place two separate bets and you can win first, lose other, or win both/lose both.

Alternative Asian handicap meaning in football

Let’s use football as a simple example to explain how does alternative Asian handicap work. Imagine that you visited one of our recommended bookmakers and saw an offer like this:

  • Team A +1.5
  • Team B -1.5

These are half-line bets, as explained above, and we can use them as an example of alternative Asian handicap 1.5 betting. These odds mean that:

  • If you place a bet on Team A, it must not lose the match by 2 or more points. Team A can still lose the match, but if the score difference is 2 (or more) points, you will lose the bet. In all other outcomes, you win this bet.
  • If you place a bet on Team B, it must win the match by 2 or more points. If it wins the match by a single point difference (or lose the match), you will lose the bet too.
